Enhanced Background with Simple Tips - May 2026 Paper Pumpkin Alternative Card

I'm excited to share Alternative Card #6 from the May 2026 Paper Pumpkin Kit!

One of my favorite things to do when creating Paper Pumpkin alternatives is to take the beautiful printed designs and make them even more unique with a few simple techniques. For this card, I added extra stamping and used a White Gel Pen to enhance the background, giving the nighttime sky even more depth and sparkle.

These little details are subtle, but they make such a big difference! Combined with the layered frame and glowing lights, the finished card feels rich in texture while still allowing the gorgeous artwork from the kit to shine.

Card Assembly Instructions

1. Build the Background

Cut a 4-1/4" x 5-1/2" piece from the front of the coordinating Envelope to the String Lights Cardbase.

Stamp the Stars in Misty Moonlight ink on the envelope piece in the Blue area mainly focused along the outside edge.

Adhere to the cardbase.

2. Create the Layered Focal Piece

Stamp the Stars in Misty Moonlight ink on the String Light Cardbase piece in the blue area. Stay away from the lightbulbs.

Mat it onto the slightly larger piece of Basic Black cardstock before attaching it to the card front with dimensionals.

Add the Lamp Post Die Cut to the left side with dimensionals.

3. Add the Greeting & Twine

Add Embossing Buddy to the Black Strip. Stamp "Wishing You Happiness" sentiment in VersaMark ink. Add White Embossing Powder and remove excess. Heat until shiny with a Heat Tool.

Wrap 18” White Baker's Twine behind the sentiment and create several loose loops before securing the back of the greeting. The twine softens the bold black layers while adding just the right amount of texture

Attach the sentiment across the center panel, between the blue & yellow areas, with dimensionals.

4. Enhance the Background

Here's where the magic happens!

Use a White Gel Pen to add tiny dots and highlights around the stamped stars and throughout the background.

You don't need many—just a few extra details help create the illusion of a sky filled with sparkling stars.

These simple additions blend beautifully with the printed artwork and make the background feel more finished and dimensional.

My Favorite Design Detail

I absolutely love how just a few simple techniques completely transform the printed background.

The extra stamped stars blend seamlessly into the original artwork, while the White Gel Pen creates tiny highlights that look like twinkling stars scattered across the evening sky.

These little additions don't overpower the original design—they simply enhance what's already there and make the entire card feel more custom and handcrafted.

Why I Love This Card

This project is a great reminder that you don't always need extra embellishments to elevate a design.

Sometimes a little stamping and a few touches with a White Gel Pen are all it takes to give a card more personality and depth.

The layered framing, glowing lights, and enhanced night sky work together to create a card that's elegant, peaceful, and full of beautiful detail.
