The Center OPENS! Fun Fold Alternative Card Idea for May 2026 Paper Pumpkin Kit

I'm excited to share Alternative Card #4 from the May 2026 Paper Pumpkin Kit!

This card may look like a standard greeting card at first glance, but it has a fun surprise! The center panel opens while the two narrow side panels remain attached to the back of the card, creating an interactive fun fold that's both unique and easy to make.

I also love how the beautiful lantern scene continues across all three panels, creating one seamless image. The bold sentiment placed across the opening helps disguise the fun fold until it's opened, making it even more fun for the recipient!

Card Assembly Instructions

1. Prepare the Card Base

Cut the front of the cardbase 3/4" from the left and right edges up to the score line. This will give you three panels attached to the card along the top folded edge. Left panel 3/4", middle panel 2-3/4", and right panel 3/4".

Cut the Lantern Cardbase into three pieces - 5/8" x 5-1/4" from the left, 2-1/2" x 5-1/4" from the middle & 5/8" x 5-1/4" from the right.

Add these pieces to the corresponding panels on the cardbase. The side pieces should match with the inside edge creating a border along the outside edge, top & bottom. The center piece should have even borders along all edges in the center panel.

2. Assemble the Inside

Cut banner ends to the Yellow Strip cut from an envelope. Add it across the center of the card when opened.

Adhere the White piece to the middle of the center area when the card is open.

3. Add the Sentiment

Stamp in Pumpkin Pie Ink the Stars image on the Orange Strips cut from the envelope. Trim one end into a banner. Add each strip to the front of the center panel in the middle of the Yellow Strip with dimensionals. They may meet in the middle depending on how long they are.

Use an Embossing Buddy on the Blackberry Bliss 1-3/4" Circle. Stamp “Time to Celebrate” in VersaMark. Add White Embossing Powder and tap of excess. Heat with Heat Tool until shiny. Add to the center of the Orange Banners with dimensionals.

The large focal greeting naturally draws attention while helping conceal where the fun fold opens.

4. Finish the Card

Add the Small Lantern with a dimensional above the greeting.

Wrap 18” White Baker's Twine around the sentiment and tie it into a loose bow on the right. Tuck it under the greeting below the Orange Banner.

Finish by adding a few silver embellishments around the front to mimic the stars already printed throughout the nighttime sky.

These tiny details add just the right amount of sparkle without competing with the lantern artwork.

Why I Love This Card

I love cards that have a little surprise waiting inside!

At first glance, this looks like a beautifully layered card, but once the recipient realizes the center opens independently from the side panels, it becomes a memorable interactive design.

The continuous lantern artwork makes the entire front feel like one large image, while the hidden opening adds an unexpected element of fun.

Best of all, it's much easier to create than it looks!

One Simple Trick to Make This Card POP! An Alternative Card Idea for May 2026 Paper Pumpkin Kit

I'm excited to share Alternative Card #3 from the May 2026 Paper Pumpkin Kit!

One of my favorite ways to stretch a Paper Pumpkin kit is by cutting apart the card bases and using the beautiful artwork in a completely different way. For this card, I used the stunning Lantern Card Base as my background and then created a layered focal point by popping up the center of the design.

Even though this card is incredibly simple to assemble, the extra layers create wonderful depth and naturally draw your eye right to the greeting. It's proof that you don't need lots of embellishments or complicated techniques to create a card that really stands out.

Measurements

Lantern Cardbase* - 4-1/4" x 5-1/2"

Thick Basic White Cardbase - 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" scored at 4-1/4"

Silver Foil - 2-7/8" x 3-1/8"

White Baker’s Twine - 18"

Scallop Label*

Large Lantern*

Two Lanterns*

Card Assembly Instructions

1. Prepare the Background

Begin with one of the Lantern Card Bases from the kit and cut it in half at 4-1/4" x 5-1/2".

Cut out the center by measuring 3/4" from the right edge and cutting with the blade starting in the center up to 1-1/4" and down to 4-1/4". Repeat on the left edge with the same measurements.

Measure 1-1/4" from the top edge and cut with the blade starting in the center up to 3/4" and down to 3-1/2". Repeat on the bottom edge with the same measurements.

Place the center back into the frame and stamp the Trees in Misty Moonlight in the bottom yellow area. Stagger them to get different heights. You can fill in more space by turning the stamp upside down and connecting the bottom edges - see video for tip.

2. Create the Layers

To give a little more depth to the card, blend with a Blending Brush and Blackberry Bliss ink the outside edge of the frame piece. Add as much color as you want. Adhere the frame to the cardbase.

Stack the center piece to the top of the Silver Foil piece. There will be a small border around the center piece. Pop them up with Stampin' Dimensionals to the center of the card & frame.

3. Add the Twine & Lanterns

In the center of the card add adhesive and with 18” of White Baker’s Twine create a double bow.

Add the Large Lantern slightly over the center of the twine with dimensionals.

Add the Two Lantern Die Cut below the Larger one with dimensionals.

4. Add the Greeting

Stamp "Time to Celebrate" sentiment in Blackberry Bliss ink onto the Scallop Label from the kit. Adhere it with dimensionals to the top right area and slightly over the twine.

5. Finishing Touch

If you want to add another level of dimension trace a larger rectangle around the center panel with a Silver Marker. I love this one on Amazon -

Why I Love This Card

Sometimes the artwork in a Paper Pumpkin kit is simply too beautiful to cover up—and this lantern scene is one of those examples.

By popping up only the center portion, the design gains wonderful dimension while still allowing the gorgeous background to shine. The layered squares almost feel like you're looking through a picture frame directly at the glowing lanterns floating into the night sky.

It's elegant, simple, and comes together in just a few minutes.
