Torn Paper Technique + Easy Hummingbird Coloring! | March 2026 Paper Pumpkin Alternative Card Idea

Welcome back to Paper Pumpkin Week here on Creative Chelsey! Today I’m sharing my sixth alternative card idea using the March 2026 Paper Pumpkin Kit, and this one is all about soft texture and simple coloring techniques.

This card combines a torn paper technique with beautifully colored hummingbirds to create a layered, artistic look that feels effortless but really stands out!

For this design, I focused on:

Creating soft texture with a torn paper edge

Adding depth with layered background pieces

Using simple coloring to bring the hummingbirds to life

Finishing with a bold sentiment and a touch of twine

It’s a great example of how you can take the kit elements and elevate them with just a couple of easy techniques.

Card Assembly Instructions

1. Tear Your Paper for Texture

Take the Light Gray Cardbase piece from the kit and tear along the bottom edge a little lower then middle to create a soft, organic border.

šŸ‘‰ Tip: Tear slowly and toward yourself for more control and a softer white edge.

2. Stamp & Color the Hummingbirds

Stamp the Hummingbird images in Basic Gray ink near the top of the Light Gray piece and bring them to life with color!

For the Yellow Hummingbird I used: Petal Pink, Lemon Lolly, Old Olive, Bubble Bath & Smoky Slate.

For the Blue Hummingbird I used: Lost Lagoon, Pool Party, Berry Burst, Bubble Bath, Petal Pink & Smoky Slate.

You can get a step-by-step tutorial from my video below.

Keep it simple:

Add a light base color first

Blend in a slightly darker shade for depth

Use soft color combinations (like pinks, yellows, and teals) to keep that airy feel

šŸ‘‰ Tip: You don’t need to overthink it—loose, simple coloring looks beautiful on these images!

3. Add Background Stamping

Stamp the floral image with a Stamp OFF - Stamp ON Technique to get a lighter color below the Hummingbirds to add texture without taking away from the focal point.

Add some of the Small Splatter Dots in Lost Lagoon ink around the Flowers & Hummingbirds.

4. Stamp & Tear the Envelope Piece

Stamp the Large Branch image in Pool Party ink on the Envelope scrap.

Cut down to 4” and tear along the bottom edge.

Add some of the Small Splatter Dots in Lost Lagoon ink.

5. Add Layer to the Cardbase

Begin with the Bubble Bath strip at the bottom of the cardbase.

Add the Pool Party piece to cover the top edge of the Bubble Bath strip.

Add the Light Gray Hummingbird piece at the top of the cardbase with adhesive along the top edge and dimensionals along the bottom edge to give a little depth to the card.

6. Add the Sentiment

Add Foam Adhesive Sheet to the Basic Black Cardstock piece and cut out “Beautiful”

Add Adhesive Sheet to the Petunia Pop piece and cut out “Beautiful”. Layer it on top of the Basic Black piece. Add to the center of the Pool Party & Bubble Bath piece on the cardbase.

Cut the Long Label from the kit at 1-1/4" keeping the flag on the right side and write “You are” in a black pen. Add above Beautiful with dimensionals.

7. Finish with Twine

Create a small Banner from Petunia Pop Cardstock and add it to the top right corner.

Unravel 12” of Black Twine and with 2 strands create a small bow and attach it to the center of the banner for contrast. Trim the ends if needed.

Add a few embellishments if you have leftover Glitter Dots for a finishing touch.

8. Inside Option

On the smaller torn piece of Light Gray Cardbase stamp one of the Hummingbirds in Basic Gray ink. Color and attach along the bottom edge.

Add some of the Small Splatter Dots in Lost Lagoon ink.

Why I Love This Card

This card is one of my favorites because it shows how simple techniques can make a big impact.

The torn paper adds softness and movement, while the coloring brings the hummingbirds to life without needing anything complicated.

It’s easy, pretty, and perfect for sending a little encouragement to someone special šŸ’—
