New Handmade Card Technique- Using PAPER SCRAPS To Make Fun Backgrounds | Stampin Up- Love of Leaves

What do you do with all your paper scraps from your projects? I have a friend who throws everything away…Me…well I keep almost everything. My rule is it has to have a side that is longer than 2” for me to keep it. Which means I have a lot of paper scraps in my craft room.

The other day I ran across this cute quilt and pillow ( @suzyquilts ) and loved the idea to use my paper scraps to create a card with this pattern. For today’s tutorial I show you how to do this using any 4-5 colors of solid cardstock.

I hope you enjoy this handmade card tutorial and come back for more. I would love to see your finished creations that are inspired by this tutorial! You can tag me in any social media post using @creativechelsey | #creativechelsey or email me at chelsey@creativechelsey.com

1- Begin by prepping your strips. Take any strips that are larger than ½” and cut them into smaller strips. They don’t need to be straight and actually look better when at an angle.

2- Cut the copy paper in half so the final size is 5 ½” x 8 ½”

3- Glue the stirps on to the copy paper so when you hold the paper with the 5 ½” side at the top, the strips are running vertically. Trim or tear anything that is longer than 8 ½”. If using liquid glue make sure to smooth out each piece so you don’t get too much warping. Once you have filled the copy paper. Trim everything to it is nice and even. Don’t go any smaller than 5 ¼” x 8 ¼”.

4- Decide how wide you want your stripes that run horizontally down your card to be. I cut mine at 1 ¼”. You want to make sure your paper is turned so the strips run horizontal when cutting. Your finished size should be 1 ¼” (or your choice of width) x 5 ¼”.

5- Subtract the width you just cut (1 ¼” or your #) from 4” (so 4” – 1 ¼” = 2 ¾”) Next rotate your paper again so the strips are now vertical and cut the width to the number from the equation (2 ¾” for me). Then rotate and trim at 5 ¼”. So your finished size should be # width x 5 ¼”. Watch the video if you have any questions.

6- Glue these strips onto the front of you cardbase. I like the horizontal stripes to be on the left and the vertical on the right.

7- Stamp a small image from your choice of stamp set in VersaMark ink randomly over the background. Add clear embossing powder. Remove excess and heat with heat tool until shinny.

8- Stamp your images on the scrap White or Vanilla cardstock in coordinating colors, fussy cut or die cut. Stamp your greeting and flag the ends. Add these pieces to the bottom right area of your card.

9- Add any ribbon or embellishments.

All Done!
